A computer is simply a programmable machine that receives input, stores and manipulates data, and provides output in a useful format. One of the first programmable mechanical devices was the Jacquard loom in 1801. In its simplicity, it used punched cards that corresponded to one row of the design.

There have been mechanical examples of computers throughout history, but the first electronic computers came along in the 1940s and were the size of a large room. With the advent of integrated circuit boards, computers have both reduced in size, and improved in computing power.

Computers have come a long way since that first Jacquard loom and so has the need for qualified computer and information technology specialists capable of operating the latest hardware, software and networking capabilities.
